Groceries sometimes take up a large chunk of our budget (too large). I know we are all looking for ways to save money on groceries and it can be done. You don’t have to spend hundreds and hundreds every month if you just use a smarter shopping approach.
Here are 10 ways that you can save money on groceries that will fit your budget.
Stay Away From Brand Names
Look, I know we all like buying the brand names, but some generic brands are almost exactly like the brand name products. Generic brands are way cheaper and offer you the same product. You can always check the ingredient of the generic product to see if its the same as the name-brand product if you are unsure.
Always Use a Grocery List
Before you go to the grocery store go through the food cupboard and the fridge and write down everything you need. Now that you now exactly what you need, you can look at the ads of all the stores near you and determine which is cheaper.
Having a list also ensures that you don’t buy any random and unnecessary products. Go to the store with a plan and stick with it.
Buy Items On Sale
When you are at the store and see items on sale that you know you will definitely use – stock up on it. This will save you money in the long run. Just make sure you 100% need and use the items otherwise you will spend more even though you are buying on sale.
Don’t Buy Prepared Food and Meals
I know ready meals can save you a lot of time and are quick and convenient. But that convenience can cost you a lot of money. Rather buy the ingredients yourself and cook it at home.
Compare The Price Of Different Unit Sizes
Don’t always just grab the bigger size and think you are getting more bang for your buck. Some companies are sneaky and just make you think that you are. Do the calculations and work out if it is a better deal to take a larger package instead of two smaller ones.
Use Shopping Apps & Coupons
Look for a smartphone app that compares the different prices from different grocery stores. There are also coupon apps available that you can use directly in store.
That being said, don’t shy away from using coupons. They can save you A LOT of money and almost every store offers coupons.
Eat Before You Shop
When you go to the grocery store hungry you are more likely to buy things you don’t need. Reaching for everything that looks delicious can blow your food budget. So rather eat a nice meal beforehand and stick to your grocery list.
Change Your Grocery Store
If you always go to the same grocery store it is time to change it up. Don’t be afraid to do your shopping at discount stores. Huge warehouse stores are also great for buying needed items and bulk.
Stay Away From Bottled Water
If you stop buying bottled water you can use all that money and invest in a good filter for your home. How many half full bottles of water have you thrown away? That is money being wasted that you could have used on something else.
Avoid The Middle Shelf
Grocery stores normally display all the more popular and more expensive items on the middle rack. Check out the higher and lower racks for all the less expensive items.
